Buried beneath your lawn is something very important to you: your sewer line. When it works, it will carry wastewater out to the main sewer line. When there is a problem, you run the risk of sewerage entering your home, creating expensive and inconvenient flooding.
You should have your sewer line rodded annually to keep the line clear of any obstructions. But you should also have a video sewer line inspection to detect any potential problems such as blockages, clogs, cracks, leaks, root intrusions, and other issues.
How It Works
To perform a video sewer line inspection, a small, waterproof camera with bright LED lights is attached to the end of a lengthy cable which the plumber uses to push the camera into the sewer. As the camera moves through the line, the lights illuminate the line to capture real-time video footage of the pipe’s condition.
The plumber monitors the sewer line’s condition through a screen. The video sewer line inspection can be recorded for future use. The camera head also contains a transmitter that allows the camera’s position to be located from above.
Some problems, such as an overgrowth of tree roots, can be addressed immediately through rodding or the use of chemicals. More extensive problems such as a shear or collapse will require excavation. Because of the locator, the operator will know the location and depth of the problem.
Benefits
Here are the benefits of a video sewer line inspection:
- The big one, of course, is it identifies small problems before they become big problems. Spend a little to avoid spending a lot.
- The inspection will also pinpoint the exact location of the problem, eliminating the need for excavating the whole line, which would be much more intrusive and expensive.
- If you can claim the problem on your insurance, the video sewer line inspection will verify why you need the work.
- If you are thinking of selling your home, the video inspection will confirm the condition of your sewer line.
- It provides peace of mind knowing you do not have a problem.
Consider a Video Sewer Line Inspection If:
- You have been experiencing sewer line backups
- There are trees growing near your sewer line, and you are concerned tree roots have entered your sewer line
- You suspect there may be a problem because you have disposed of inappropriate items down the kitchen sink or toilet
- You suspect corrosion, a crack, or a hole due to aging or ground settling
- You live in an older house and have not had an inspection in a while
- You are buying or selling a home
- You just want peace of mind
