Benefits of Clean Water
We’ve spent the last few months discussing ways to save water inside and outside your home. In addition to saving water, you also want your water to be as pure as possible. A few reasons:
- Cleaner water is healthier water. Water filtration systems can filter out 99% of the chemicals in your home’s water supply, including lead, bacteria, copper, iron, chlorine, chloramines, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). This leads to healthier bathing and drinking water.
- Cleaner water is good for your skin and hair because those same chemicals can cause your hair to become brittle and your skin to dry out.
- Cleaner water is good for the environment. Drink the clean water from your home rather than using plastic water bottles that are harmful to the environment.
- Cleaner water saves money. Save the money you would have spent on plastic water bottles.
Types of Water Filtration Systems
Here are the main types of water filtration systems:
- Carbon filtration systems are the most widely used.
- Advantages: absorb heavy metals; improve taste; use minimal space; inexpensive
- Disadvantages: The water filters must be replaced every six to 12 months; the lead removing capabilities of the filters erode over time
- Reverse osmosis systems use activated carbon block filters and a semi-permeable membrane that pushes water through pressure.
- Advantages: very high level of filtration
- Disadvantages: filters must be replaced every six to 12 months; more expensive; waste water; take up more space
- Distillation
- Advantages: very high level of filtration
- Disadvantages: most expensive method; uses electricity; takes time to process
- Faucet-mounted units are installed right over the faucet.
- Advantages: remove lead, chlorine, and other substances; do not require electricity; inexpensive
- Disadvantages: The water filter cartridges need to be replaced frequently, low quality filtering
Lesser used types of filters include:
- Ultraviolet light. UV filters destroy various bacteria.
- Sand and sediment mesh. These filters remove dirt, clay, sand, and rust particles
- Infrared. These filters use heat and light to negatively charge hard water.
- Alkaline and water ionizers. Water passes over electrically charged places to separate the alkaline water from the acidic water. This results in soft water.
