If you are considering buying an electric vehicle (EV), it makes sense to buy a home EV charger as opposed to relying on public chargers for a few reasons:
- Despite the initial outlay for the home charger, over time the cost savings of “filling up” at home as opposed to public stations will outweigh that initial cost.
- It is so much more convenient to be able to charge your car at home.
- Having a home EV charger could increase the value of your home.
So given this, how do you decide what home EV charger you should buy? Here are the factors to consider.
Type
There are three types of charging stations. Level 3 stations (also called direct current fast chargers) are those chargers that look like gas pumps you see at public charging stations. They are extremely expensive (up to $35,000) and really are more than what you need at home.
Here are the two types you should consider:
- Level 1 stations use 110V power and are the slowest chargers, requiring up to 24 hours to fully charge, and they will give you about 100 miles per charge. That is OK if you are only driving short distances. An added benefit is that this type of home EV charger can be plugged into a standard outlet. Some EVs come with Level 1 chargers; otherwise, they cost around $300.
- Level 2 stations are more powerful, using 208/240V power. They fully charge within three to seven hours and can power longer distances. These do require a dedicated circuit and are also more expensive, costing $500 – $1,200 plus installation. If you can afford the extra few hundred bucks, a Level 2 home EV charger makes more sense.
Indoor or Outdoor
Decide where you want to place your home EV charger. In the garage generally makes the most sense, but some chargers can be mounted outside on a wall or pole.
Cable Length
You need to know how long of a cable you need. Measure the distance between the home EV charging station and the port in your car to make sure you have enough cable.
“Smart” Stations
Not surprisingly, some charging stations are Wi-Fi enabled for monitoring and adjusting charging events remotely. This will add to the cost.
