Your electric circuit breaker panel is basically the brain of your house. It is the source that powers all your electrical items, from your lights to your AC unit to your appliances and technology. The panel can last for decades, but eventually you may need to replace it. Here are some signs you’re due for a new electric circuit breaker panel installation.
1. It Has Been Recalled or Is Out of Date
The following electric panels are considered out of date or have been recalled. They are:
- Pushmatic panels
- Challenger panels made by Challenger Electrical Equipment Corp. or Eaton/Cutler Hammer
- Federal Pacific Electric (PBE) Stab-Lok panels
- Zinsco panels (aka GTE Sylvania-Zinsco panels)
These panels are potential fire hazards and should be replaced. Additionally, your insurance company may cancel your policy if it is not replaced.
Here are some other signs you may need a new electric circuit breaker panel installation. Also note that if you are moving into an existing home, the circuit breaker panel should be included in the home inspection.
2. Your Box Still Uses Fuses
Older homes may still have circuit boxes with fuses. Consideration should be given to replacement with circuit breakers, which are safer and more efficient.
3. Your Panel Is Old
While the average box can last 25 to 40 years, older panels – even those with breakers and not fuses – may not comply with new safety standards and may be uninsurable. Plus, they can lead to other problems.
4. Circuit Breakers Are Tripping Frequently
This is an indication your box cannot handle the power demand and you need additional circuit capacity. This can also wear out the breakers, putting your home at risk of overloads and even electrical fires.
5. Undersized Panel
Most modern homes with central air conditioning need a 200-amp panel. If you do not have a 200-amp panel, you should consider new electric circuit breaker panel installation as your demand for electricity will only go up.
6. Planned Increased Demand
You should consider upgrading your circuit breaker if you are planning any of the following:
- You are using multiple power strips to meet your needs and you therefore need to add additional outlets.
- You are upgrading to an electric vehicle
- You are planning to add electronics or appliances that consume a great deal of electricity.
- You are remodeling and need extra outlets.
7. No Room for Additional Breakers
Your existing panel may have space for existing breakers. But if it does not, and you are either having problems now or you know your power requirements will be increasing, a new electric circuit breaker panel installation may be the right approach.
8. Dimming or Flickering Lights
If you are noticing your lights dim or flicker when you are using a great deal of electricity elsewhere, that is a warning sign of potential problems inside the electrical box.
9. Rust
Rust and corrosion on wires, cables, circuit breakers, screws, doors and other parts increase the risk of equipment and component failure.
10. Burning Smell
If you detect a burning smell, it could mean the wires are melting or burnt. The panel is then at risk of overheating and catching fire.
11. Strange Sounds
Unusual buzzing, crackling, hissing or humming could indicate loose wires and damaged components.
12. Burn Marks
Burn marks and/or black spots on your panel are another indication it may not be functioning properly.
13. Heat
If your panel feels warm or hot, that is another sign you may need the panel replaced.
