Previously, we discussed whole-house vs. portable dehumidifiers and recommended whole-house dehumidifiers as an affordable option because they do a better job of extracting excess moisture and removing humidity from your home. So how do you choose the right dehumidifier? Here are seven points to keep in mind as you shop for your new whole-house dehumidifier.
Dehumidifier Size
The most important consideration is the size of the dehumidifier, which indicates the dehumidifier’s capacity. Size depends on a few factors:
- Cubic Footage. It is not enough to size a dehumidifier just on the square footage of your entire home (length x width). You also need to factor in the height of the rooms, so cubic footage (length x width x height) is the correct calculation. Many people will quote square footage assuming an eight-foot ceiling. If your ceilings are eight feet, the square footage calculation should suffice.
- Where You Live. If you live in an area with high humidity levels (and it can get very humid in Chicago’s North Shore and Northwest suburbs), you will need to increase the dehumidifier’s capacity.
- How Well Your Home Is Sealed. Homes are rated loosely sealed, moderately sealed, and tightly sealed. The poorer your home is sealed, the larger the size dehumidifier you will need.
Circulation
The recommendation would be to have a dedicated return and to exhaust the dehumidifier into the HVAC supply, allowing the blower on the HVAC unit to distribute the dehumidified air into the home. If not, a model with a “circulation” mode will allow you to set the dehumidifier to always circulate air.
Noise and heat
Units will generate both noise and heat. So where you install the unit will require some thought.
Portability
Some whole house dehumidifiers can be moved. While that may sound attractive, remember they may be heavy, and they will need a place to drain. It is generally better to choose a permanent installation.
Power
Check with your licensed electrical contractor to make sure the circuit you will use has sufficient amperage. If you choose a dehumidifier that requires more electricity than what is available, you will also need to schedule electrical work.
Filters
Some dehumidifier units come with removable, washable filters. If your dehumidifier unit has its own return, you will want a bigger MERV filter. MERV filters are designed to capture particles that could otherwise clog the coils of your system.
Wi-Fi
Like everything else these days, several dehumidifier models have Wi-Fi capability. Smart features will allow you to control the unit, set your desired humidity level, as well as turn the dehumidifier on or off remotely.
