Clean water has many benefits.
- It’s safe to drink.
- It’s healthier to bathe in for your hair and skin.
- It’s convenient – no need to boil, treat or filter it.
- It’s economical – no need for plastic water bottles.
- It’s environmentally friendly.
If you get your water from a well, chemicals, metals, and microorganisms can cause the water coming into your home to be impure. That also holds true – although to a lesser extent – if you get your water from a municipal water supply. To defend against these, it is important to consider a water filtration system. The most common are carbon water filters
How They Work
Carbon water filters use carbon-rich materials – usually coconut shells, of all things – to remove impurities from water. Heated carbon produces millions of tiny pores. For example, one gram of activated carbon can have a surface area of more than 5,000 square feet. The pores then use a process called adsorption (not absorption) to trap contaminants in the pores while letting the clean water flow through.
What Standard Carbon Filters Trap
Here are some of the things carbon filters capture
- Chlorine. Filters remove up to 99% of chlorine, thus improving taste and reducing eye and skin irritation.
- Lead and heavy metals. Some filters known as carbon blocks can remove copper, lead, and other harmful metals.
- Herbicides and pesticides. Filters can catch runoff toxins like atrazine and glyphosate that carry hormonal and neurological risks.
- PFAs. Carbon filters can catch up to 95% of these synthetic “forever chemicals” often found in well water and tap water near industrial zones.
- Pharmaceuticals. Filters can reduce traces of medications such as antibiotics and painkillers.
- VOCs. Carbon filters remove Volatile Organic Compounds commonly found in cleaning supplies, paints, and other products.
- Odors and tastes. Carbon filters eliminate that “rotten eggs” smell, improving taste.
What Premium Carbon Water Filters Trap
If you want even more protection, more advanced carbon filters, such as catalytic carbon filters and carbon blocks, can capture the following:
- Asbestos
- Chloramine (just catalytic carbon filters)
- Chlorine byproducts
- Lead – the best filters capture up to 99% of lead
- Microbial cysts
- Radon
