Sales of electric vehicles (EVs) slowed in 2025, largely due to the expiration of tax credits. But EVs still accounted for about 10% of all car sales. That is because EVs have many positive features including:
- No tailpipe emissions, making them more eco-friendly
- Lower maintenance costs
- A smoother ride
If you do purchase an EV, you will want to purchase an EV charging station. There are three types of charging stations. The big ones you see in commercial parking lots that look like gas pumps are called Level 3 stations. While these charge fast, they are extremely expensive – $40,000 and more. So while it is nice they are available on long road trips, they are more than you need in your home.
So that leaves Level 1 and Level 2 charging stations. Here is a quick comparison.
| Level 1 | Level 2 | |
| Cost | $100 – $1,000 (some EVs come with a Level 1 charging station) | $400 – $1,500 plus installation of a 240 V outlet if necessary |
| Outlet required | 120V | 240V |
| Charging time | Up to 24 hours | Overnight |
| Range | About 100 miles give or take | Several hundred miles |
The recommendation: If you can afford it, purchase a Level 2 station. They charge quicker and have much greater range. The downside is you may need to install a 240V outlet, and you will need to make sure your electric control panel can handle it.
Here are some other factors:
- Location. Most people put their charging station in the garage. But you can install it on a pole or wall outside.
- Cable length. Cables can run from 10 feet to 33 feet, although the National Electrical Code (NEC) has a 25-foot limit. If you put your charging station in the garage, that should be more than enough. You will need to measure the distance from the outlet to the car’s port to determine the precise length you need.
- Efficiency. Many charging stations will have an Energy Star label, which means they are very efficient.
- Safety. Make sure the EV charging station meets safety standards on electrical safety, fire prevention, physical protection, user protection, and communication security to prevent shocks, fires, and misuse.
- “Smart” stations. As with everything else, you can get a Wi-Fi-enabled charging station that allows you to adjust and monitor settings from your mobile device.
- Warranty. Your station should come with a warranty of at least three years for parts and labor.
- Credits, incentives, and rebates. While federal tax credits are gone, state and local credits may still be available. And utility companies may offer rebates.
- Bring in a professional. If you are making this type of investment, it makes sense to hire an electrical contractor that has the expertise necessary to help you select and install your charging station
