When considering a new career or a career change, why not a career as a professional plumber?  It is a profession with lots of PROs – both tangible (money) and intangible.  Here are some of them.

Tangible PROs of Being a Plumber

  1. Great pay.  Union plumbers in Chicago currently earn about $53 an hour, coming out to around $100,000 a year.  Top earners can make even more.  With overtime, it is possible to earn more than $130,000 annually.
  2. And benefits.  Union plumbers(our plumbers are union) also enjoy a variety of benefits including health, dental and vision insurance, a retirement plan, and life insurance.
  3. Low cost of entry.  Becoming a licensed plumber is very affordable.  The cost of a community college or vocational school pales in comparison to the cost of a four-year college, let alone graduate school.  If you can test well enough to get into a union, your education is free.  This also means little if any student loan debt.
  4. Earn while you learn.  Becoming a licensed plumberrequires serving as an apprentice.  But while you are learning, you are also getting paid.
  5.  There is a massive need for licensed plumbers, and there are shortages in many areas.  The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statisticsestimates the need for plumbers will grow 6% through 2033.  This growth is fueled by new construction, a focus on water efficiency, and retiring plumbers.
  6. Room to grow.  You can advance your career in numerous ways, including becoming a master plumber, a foreman, a project manager, and more.  And, of course, with advancement comes increased pay.
  7. Go your own way.  You can hang out your own shingle and start your own company.  The potential rewards are even greater (as are the responsibilities).

Intangible PROs of Being a Plumber

You spend so much of your life working, you want to like it.  And you will, in several ways:

  1. You’re helping your customers.  What you do makes a difference in your customers’ lives.  Maybe it’s something as routine as installing a new toilet.  Or maybe it’s an emergency like repairing a frozen pipe or rodding a clogged sewer lineto prevent flooding.
  2. You’re helping your community. You will help maintain your community’s infrastructure by maintaining municipal water services, and by installing water, drainage, gas piping, and waste and vent solutions.
  3.  People appreciate that what you do for your customers and community is important and not easy.  They will respect you for it.
  4. Sense of accomplishment.  In addition to earning the respect of others, you will also experience a sense of fulfillment, adding to your job satisfaction.
  5. Mentally challenging.  You’ll be asked to analyze situations, solve problems and come up with the most efficient solutions every day.
  6. Physically challenging.Being a plumber means you will be in great physical shape. You will need to bend, crouch and squeeze into small places.  You will have to lift heavy pipes and materials and run heavy equipment.
  7. You won’t be bored.Becoming a plumber means you will be out and about every day – probably doing something different.  One day it’s repairing a leaky toilet.  The next installing a new water heater.
