There are numerous benefits to installing a video doorbell:
- They increase safety as they monitor who is approaching your house. And they keep a video record.
- They add convenience. You can see when a solicitor comes to your door, and then choose not to answer it when the doorbell rings.
- You can view the door on your mobile phone or tablet from anywhere there is Wi-Fi.
- They are easy to install. While specific instructions may vary by make and model, the following provides you with most of the information for a common installation
Installing a Video Doorbell Camera
- Get the proper tools. Sometimes many of the tools will come in the kit. You may need:
- Screwdriver and screws
- A charging cable
- A level
- A drill if you have to screw the doorbell into brick or stucco (this won’t be included)
- A special masonry drill bit if necessary
- A boxcutter or flathead screwdriver to remove the old doorbell. Charge the video doorbell battery using the charging cable provided. Charging may take several hours. The instructions will show you how to know when the battery is fully charged, but it is often indicated by a green light.
- Download the video doorbell app to your mobile phone and/or tablet.
- Connect to the Internet, following the app’s instructions. It is advisable to do the Wi-Fi setup near where the doorbell will be installed.
- Shut off the power to your existing doorbell.
- Remove the old doorbell. Use the screwdriver or boxcutter to remove the faceplate. Unscrew the existing doorbell and gently pull it out, exposing the power wires. Loosen the screws to detach the wires.
- Determine where you want to put the mounting brackets for your new doorbell.
- Loosen the screws on the mounting bracket. Wrap the doorbell wires around the screws and tighten the screws.
- Mount the doorbell by mounting it into the bracket.
- Restore the power.
- Use the app to select the settings you want, such as motion detection and night vision.
