You’ve done a good job getting your house ready for winter. The furnace is tuned up. You’ve done all those other “get your house ready for winter” things. And then you leave the warmth of your house and enter the frigid conditions of your garage. So why not heat the garage? There are lots of benefits.
- It can get really cold in Chicago’s North Shore and Northwest suburbs. With a heated garage, you can go from a warm home straight to a warm garage.
- Energy efficiency. A heated garage can also help insulate your home and allow your furnace to not work as hard.
- Protect your car. If your garage gets super cold, it can kill your battery, reduce the pressure in your tires, and cause fluids to freeze.
- Protect possessions. Tools, paint, and other possessions can be damaged by cold weather. And if you are storing bottled or canned water, pop, or other drinks in your garage, they can freeze and burst, causing a mess.
- Use it more. If your garage is warm, you can use it all year. Exercise, do chores, or whatever else you might want to do.
Types of Garage Heaters
There are numerous garage heater options for heating your garage. You can use space heaters, but that is really not a good idea. Our suggestion would be to do something more permanent. Here are a few suggestions.
Ductless Heating
Ductless heating uses an outdoor compressor and indoor air handling unit without the need for ducts. These garage heater options are aesthetically pleasing, energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and can be placed anywhere. However, they are more expensive upfront than some other heating options and the filter must be cleared frequently. They can be electric or natural gas-powered, but natural gas is the way to go.
Forced Air
Forced air heaters connect to your natural gas line and blast hot air into your garage via a fan, blower or air handler. They are very efficient at heating your garage. Also, they are less expensive than infrared heat systems and ductless systems. However, they make some noise, and require duct cleaning and other maintenance.
Radiant Floor Heat
Radiant floor heating is a great way to keep your garage warm. It heats the surface of the garage floor and is one of the most effective ways to heat a garage. It also is very quiet. However, installation is expensive, which is why this only makes sense for new construction or a major remodel.
