Effective Jan. 1, 2027, pin-based compact fluorescent lamps (you know, the ones where you struggle to get the pins in place) and linear fluorescent lamps will no longer be sold in Illinois. Bayonet-base and screw-base compact fluorescent lamps have already been off her shelves since January. They are to be replaced with light-emitting diode (LED) lamps.
What does this mean? The good news is it does not mean you have to rip out existing fixtures or redo your lighting control system. A licensed electrician can quickly retrofit the existing fluorescent fixture to LED.
More good news. LED lighting has many advantages over fluorescent lighting. Here are a few.
- LED lighting is much more efficient. LED lighting can be up to 80 times more efficient than fluorescent lighting. A LED lamp can last 25,000 to 50,000 hours. Put another way, if you ran the light nonstop, it would last from three to six years. And while LED lamps are more expensive, the efficiency means you will save more in bulb costs over time. Additionally, you won’t need to change bulbs as often.
- Electricity bill savings. LED lights produce light more efficiently, thus saving money on your electricity bills
- Environmentally friendly. The increased efficiency also lessens the carbon footprint.
- Safety. LED lights do not contain UV rays like fluorescents do, making them safer for your eyes.
- Brighter. LED lights emanate a brighter light than fluorescents do, making it easier to work, read, etc.
- Dimming capabilities. If you want to minimize the brightness, LEDs can be dimmed to 10% of maximum output to save even more energy.
- Lots of options. LEDs come in many colors, shapes and sizes to meet your needs.
