A survey conducted last year listed the following as the top five New Year’s resolutions: saving money; exercising more; eating healthier; spending more time with family and friends; and losing weight. Nowhere in that list – and probably not in your list – is making sure your home’s electrical system is in order. So, we’ll help you. Here are 13 electrical system resolutions for 2025.
- Schedule an annual electrical inspection to identify and repair small problems before they become big ones.
- Save money by:
- Replacing incandescent bulbs with LED lights, which use 70% to 90% less energy and can last 15 times longer.
- Turning lights off when you are not in the room and using dimmers when you are.
- Turning electronics off when you are not in the room.
- Unplugging appliances such as your toaster when not in use.
- Replacing appliances with ENERGY STAR-certified appliances, which cost more but will save you money in the long run through lower electric bills.
- Consider installing “smart” lighting to not only save money but also control the ambiance in the room.
- Replace two-pronged plugs with three-pronged plugs.
- Check for and replace frayed cords and damaged outlets.
- Replace any extension cords that are damaged. If you are using a lot of extension cords, consider adding more outlets.
- Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors monthly and replace batteries at least annually. Also replace smoke detectors every 10 years and carbon monoxide detectors every six years.
- Install a whole house surge protector.
- If you have an electric vehicle but don’t have an EV charger in your home, consider investing in one.
- Install and reset ground fault circuit interrupters in any area where electricity and water may come in contact.
- If your electrical panel is decades old and/or still uses fuses, replace it. When you replace it, make sure you label the breakers.
- Invest in a standby generator to protect you if the power goes out due to heat, thunderstorms, etc.
- Consider installing roof cables to reduce the risk of damage to your roof caused by ice dams.
