While only less than 4% of U.S. households own electric vehicles (EVs), the number is growing.  If you have an EV, you will probably want to consider installing an EV charging station in your home.  While, yes, there is an initial outlay, it is just a fraction of the cost of the vehicle itself.  And over time it will pay for itself since the cost per charge will be significantly less than the cost per charge at a public location.  Plus, you have the convenience of charging the vehicle while you are at home and remove the worry of finding a public station.

Having said that, here are some things to consider.

Type of EV Charging Station

There are three types of charging stations.  Let’s quickly eliminate Level 3 stations.  These are the stations that look like gas pumps that you see in public.  In addition to being expensive (up to $35,000), they are more than what you need.  So very few homes have Level 3 chargers.

ENERGY STAR Label

The most efficient EV chargers have an ENERGY STAR label certifying that they achieve high efficiency standards.  It is a requirement for federal tax credits.

Where Do You Put It?

Most people, not surprisingly, put the EV charging station in the garage.  But if you do not have a garage or for some reason do not want to put the station in the garage, they can be mounted on a wall or pole outside.

Cable Length

Obviously, the cable must be long enough to reach the car. You will need to measure the distance between the port in your car and the EV charging station to make sure the cable is long enough.

“Smart” Chargers

Some more expensive chargers will have W-Fi capability that will let you monitor and adjust activities remotely.

Rebates

Make sure you investigate rebates from the state of Illinois and your local utility company.
