The EV market in the United States continues to grow. 1.6 million EVs were sold in 2024, up 10% from 2023 and representing 10% of all vehicles sold last year. As you know, if you have an EV it will need to be charged. Here we discuss the factors to consider.
Types of EV Charging Stations
There are three types of EV charging stations. Let’s quickly rule out Level 3 stations. These are the large stations that look like gas pumps that you see in parking lots. You don’t need the amount of charge generated by these. You also don’t need to spend up to $35,000 on one.
That leaves Level 1 and Level 2 stations. While you will have to pay to install one, over time the fact that you are eliminating the cost and inconvenience of a public station will more than offset the purchase price. The table below summarizes the differences between Level 1 and Level 2 chargers.
Level 1 | Level 2 | |
Time to fully charge | Up to 24 hours | Overnight |
Approximate distance per charge | 100 miles | Up to several hundred miles |
Outlet required | 120V | 240V |
Approximate cost | $300 (some EVs come with a Level 1 station) | $1,200 plus installation of a 240V outlet if necessary |
Our recommendation would be – if cost is not an issue – to purchase a Level 2 charger due to its charging speed and distance capability.
Other Factors
The first recommendation is to hire an electrical contractor to select and then install your EV charging station. The contractor will have the expertise and experience to help you. Some things that will be considered:
- Manufacturer. There are many manufacturers – some good and some not so good. Your contractor can steer you in the right direction
- Efficiency. Many of the most efficient charging stations will have an ENERGY STAR label. This is required for federal tax credits (see below).
- Location. Most people put the charging station in the garage. Some do elect to install it on a wall or pole outside.
- Cable length. The cable must be long enough to reach the port in the car. You will need to measure the distance.
- Safety. As with anything electrical, safety is an important factor. Insist on a charger that meets safety standards
- “Smart” chargers. Some charging stations allow you to adjust and monitor remotely via your mobile phone or tablet via Wi-Fi.
- Warranty. Insist on a good warranty. Insist on at least three years for parts and labor. More is even better.
- Incentives, credits and rebates. Federal, state and local incentives may be available. So might rebates from your local utility company. Don’t be shy. Ask.
