- Very timely for the winter, insulate your pipes to keep them from freezing and bursting, causing unwanted hassle and expense.
- To further protect against freezing pipes, when the weather turns frigid, open cabinet doors to warm the pipes, and keep a trickle of water dripping from your faucets.
- Inspect your water heater by checking the relief valve and flushing and draining it at least once a year.
- Check for and repair leaks in your toilets, faucets, etc. to save money on your water bills and reduce the risk of extensive water damage.
- Save water by only washing full loads of dishes and clothes and shutting the water off while shaving or brushing your teeth. Also take showers as opposed to baths.
- Also save water by investing in toilets and showerheads that use less water.
- Use drain catchers instead of chemical drain cleaners that can be harmful to both your pipes and your health.
- Only flush toilet paper and human waste down the toilet.
- Preserve your garbage disposal by not putting items such as coffee grounds, bones, grease, fat, oil, pits, seeds, fibrous vegetables and potato peels down the drain.
- Invest in a whole house water filtration system if hard water is making your skin and hair dry, your water taste bad, or you notice stains on your dishes.
- Have your sewer line rodded annually and have a video inspection to make sure the pipes are not damaged. This can help prevent flooding
- Test your sump pump regularly by pouring water down the pit and making sure it works. Also make sure you have a battery backup in case the power goes out.
