Like everything else, buying a showerhead is not necessarily an easy task. There are so many options to choose from. The first choice is what type of showerhead you want. Here are the primary types.
- Wall mount. AKA fixed showerhead. This is your basic traditional showerhead that is attached to a shower arm mounted into a wall. This is also the least expensive option. Fixed showerheads come with several spray patterns.
- Handheld. This type is also attached to a shower arm mounted into the wall. But this showerhead is connected to a flexible hose and detaches from the mount to help reach some of those hard-to-reach places. Several spray patterns are available. As a bonus, these are also good for washing children and pets and for people with mobility problems. Hoses can be as short as 60 inches but must be at least 84 inches long to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
- Dual. These combine a handheld and fixed showerhead. They generally have a diverter to switch between the two.
- Rain showerhead. Also known as a waterfall showerhead, these are installed in the ceiling of the shower and provide a wide, gentle spray reminiscent of an actual rainfall. They are becoming more popular, especially in newer homes.
- Body spray. These provide a full body spray via jets that are mounted into the shower. These are usually installed either in new construction or a remodel.
- Shower panel. This is a mounted panel that includes multiple showerheads, a handheld wand, and body sprays.
