With warm weather here and hot weather on the way, we hope you have had your air conditioner tuned up. And before the weather does get hot, think about whether you might need a new air conditioner. There are several signs you may need a new air conditioner. Generally, they can be divided into money, comfort, safety concerns, a few others, and age. We discuss them all here.
Money Issues
1. Your energy bills are rising. Energy bills could be increasing for a few reasons. Maybe utility rates have risen, or the weather has been hotter than usual. But if neither is the case, your bills could be rising because your unit is not as efficient as it used to be. This could be because it is not cycling off and is running constantly.
2. Repair costs are increasing. If you are spending more on repairs, chances are that it will continue. So, the question is whether you keep shelling money for repairs or bite the bullet and invest in a new unit. A rule of thumb: Multiply the age of the unit by the cost of the repair. If the answer is $5,000 or more, replace and do not repair.
Comfort Issues
The reason you have an air conditioner is to stay cool and comfortable. The following problems will cause a decrease in comfort and functionality
3. Not cooling. Is the air coming out of your vents warm or hot? It shouldn’t be. If it is, that means the unit is not doing its job.
4. Weak air flow. If the air coming out of the vents is cool, but the flow is weak, that’s not going to get the job done either.
5. Humidity. Another function of your air conditioner is to maximize comfort by keeping humidity under control. If the air in your home is unreasonably humid, that could also be a sign of a failing air conditioner.
6. Uneven temperatures. A well-functioning AC should keep the temperature in your home consistent. If some rooms are cooler than others, that is another cause for concern.
Safety Issues
7. Unhealthy air. Another function of your air conditioner is to make sure the air in your home is clean and free from dust, mold and other allergens. These pollutants cause health risks, especially for children, the elderly and people with respiratory issues.
8. Refrigerant leaks. One reason your AC may not be performing is due to a refrigerant leak.
Others
9. Electrical issues. Frayed wires and loose connections can harm the AC’s electrical components.
10. Noises. A functioning air conditioner will make a steady, low hum. It should not bang, buzz, grate, grind, rattle, screech or whistle. Any of these sounds suggest something is wrong.
11. Frozen coils. Frozen coils could indicate a problem with refrigerant. This could cause the compressor to overheat and burn out.
12. Smells. Bacteria, fungus, mold and mildew can cause moldy or musty smells which are a symptom of an AC problem.
Age
13. Old age. Finally, even if your unit is not exhibiting any of these problems, it is not going to last forever. If it is approaching 15 years, you might want to be proactive and invest in a new AC before trouble hits. Most likely if a problem occurs the warranty has expired and any repair could be quite expensive. Plus, that new AC will probably be more energy efficient, saving money in the long run.
