Have you made your New Year’s resolutions for 2026? Most likely they will include some of the following: saving money, eating better, exercising, losing weight, learning new skills, reading more, and improving mental well-being. You probably haven’t made any resolutions related to your home’s electric system. So, we have taken the opportunity to give you our “sweet 16” electric resolutions.
- Get an Annual Electrical System Inspection. An electrical system inspection can identify small problems that can be easily fixed before they become big problems that are more expensive to fix and can also present safety and health hazards. This inspection can also identify ways for you to save energy and cut costs.
Here are some other ways to cut your electrical costs.
- Flip the Switch. Turn off the lights when you are not in the room. Same with electronics.
- LED Lighting. LED lights use 70% to 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs.
- “Smart” Lighting. Installing Wi-Fi enabled lighting not only saves money but allows you to control the ambience of the room.
- Appliances. Upgrade appliances such as your refrigerator, washing machine, dryer and dishwasher with ENERGY STAR-certified appliances. They will cost more, but you will save money in the long run due to lower electricity bills.
Here are some products you can invest in to not only reduce costs but also add convenience and safety.
- Whole House Surge Protector. This will protect your electronics from being damaged by a power surge.
- Standby (Whole House) Generator. We are exposed to severe weather conditions during the year such as freezing cold, extreme heat, heavy rains and high winds. Any of those can knock your home’s power out. A standby generator will protect you during those outages and the damage they can cause.
- Roof Cables. These will prevent damage to your roof, the interior to your house and your possessions caused by ice dams.
- Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters. These special outlets should be installed in any area where water and electricity may come into contact, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.
- Electrical Panel. If your electrical control panel is 40 years old or older, or cannot handle your demand for electricity, consider a new panel.
- EV Charger. If you have an EV but do not have a charging station at home, installing one will add convenience and is a less expensive option than charging at public stations.
The next few resolutions will keep your home safe.
- Check and Replace Frayed Cords and Damaged Outlets. These are fire hazards.
- Same with Extension Cords. Replace any extension cords that are damaged.
- Remove Two-Pronged Plugs. Replace them with three-pronged plugs.
- Test Carbon Monoxide Detectors. Test them monthly, replace batteries annually and replace them every six years.
- Test Smoke Detectors. While technically not connected to your electrical system, make sure you check them monthly, replace batteries at least annually and replace them every 10 years.
