Last month we discussed the comfort, health and economic benefits of dual-zone ductless mini-split systems, which are heating and cooling systems that heat or cool multiple areas or rooms without the use of ducts. If you decide that type of system is appropriate for your home, of course budget will play a role. But here are some other things to consider when purchasing it.
- Brand. You will want to buy a reputable brand. Check things like Google ratings and the Better Business Bureau. Also talk to friends and relatives. If the brand is not reputable there is a stronger likelihood you will experience problems. Also make sure there is a reasonable manufacturer’s warranty – 7 to 12 years for the compressor and 5-10 for other parts.
- Size. When determining size of centralized heating and cooling systems, size is determined by the size of the house. With ductless mini-splits, size is determined by the individual needs of each room, or zone. The size, like with centralized systems, is calculated by British Thermal Units (BTUs). A professional HVAC contractor can conduct a load calculation to determine the appropriate BTUs. Remember too small a system may not provide adequate comfort, while too large a system will cycle on and off, reducing efficiency.
- Energy efficiency. The two key measures here are SEER ratings and HSPF ratings. For both, you want as high a rating as possible based on your budget. SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings measure cooling efficiency, and HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) ratings measure heating efficiency.
- Noise. Check out the noise ratings for both the indoor and outdoor units. Noise is measured in decibels (dB). The lower the decibels, the better.
- Smart features. If possible, select a system with Wi-Fi connectivity so you can control settings while you are away via your phone or tablet, or even if you are sitting at home but away from the thermostat.
- Contractor. You should have the system installed by a professional HVAC contractor (who can also help you select the right system). Again, check online reviews, the Better Business Bureau and/or Best Pick Reports and talk to friends and relatives. Also make sure the contractor has a labor warranty.
