Electric panels last a long time – as long as 40 years. But not forever. They may lose function, which is evidenced by things like breakers tripping or lights flickering. Or you may sense other issues, like smells or noises. No matter the reason, if it is time for a new panel, here are some steps to guide you.

  1. Panel type. There are a few different panel types. A main breaker panel is the most common, which is one panel with numerous circuit breakers that controls electric flow for the entire house. But there are also subpanels, which are used when additional circuits are needed for specific areas such as the garage. Finally, there is a transfer switch panel, which is needed for homes with backup generators.
  2. How much power do you need? Chances are you are considering a new panel because your existing one cannot handle your power needs. So, you will need to determine how much power you need. Power is measured in amperages (amps), which is the strength of the electric current. Most homes will require a 200-amp electric panel.
  3. How many circuits do you need? When determining this, hopefully with the help of a licensed electrician, keep in mind that new electronics and appliances will require more energy. Also consider whether you will be renovating or adding on to your home. Because of these factors, you may want to select an electric panel that can be expanded or upgraded.
  4. Safety first. Make sure your electric panel meets safety standards such as the National Electrical Code (NEC) and/or the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Additionally, check for proper labelling and compliance with Short Circuit Current rating (SCCR) requirements. Finally, make sure the panel has quality-rated certifications like ISO 9000.
  5. What brand? There are numerous well-known brands. Again, your licensed electrician can steer you in the right direction. But you can also talk to friends and relatives and do research online.
