Electric panels last a long time – as long as 40 years. But not forever. They may lose function, which is evidenced by things like breakers tripping or lights flickering. - How much power do you need? Chances are you are considering a new panel because your existing one cannot handle your power needs. So, you will need to determine how much power you need. Power is measured in amperages (amps), which is the strength of the electric current. Most homes will require a 200-amp electric panel.
- How many circuits do you need? When determining this, hopefully with the help of a licensed electrician, keep in mind that new electronics and appliances will require more energy. Also consider whether you will be renovating or adding on to your home. Because of these factors, you may want to select an electric panel that can be expanded or upgraded.
- Safety first. Make sure your electric panel meets safety standards such as the National Electrical Code (NEC) and/or the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Additionally, check for proper labelling and compliance with Short Circuit Current rating (SCCR) requirements. Finally, make sure the panel has quality-rated certifications like ISO 9000.
- What brand? There are numerous well-known brands. Again, your licensed electrician can steer you in the right direction. But you can also talk to friends and relatives and do research online.
