Sad as it may be, colder weather is on the way. That means preparing both the inside and the outside of your house for winter. You don’t have to do them now, but here is a checklist to help you prepare the outside of your house for winter.
- Trim the trees hanging over your house, garage, and driveway. You don’t want branches weighed down by ice falling on them.
- Aerate, overseed, and fertilize the lawn. Fall is a great time to do that.
- Clean your gutters and downspouts so water flows freely.
- Grade soil so that water flows away from your home.
- Inspect your roof and siding to prevent the cold from entering your home, to prevent water damage, and to prevent mold and mildew buildup in your home.
- Consider investing in a roof deicing system to prevent ice dams from forming on your roof. Ice dams not only can cause damage to your roof and inside your home, but they are also a health hazard.
- Drain your pool.
- Drain your sprinkler system.
- Remove your hoses and consider covering the faucets with a foam cover.
- Turn off the outside water supply.
- Check your driveways and walkways for cracks. Fill in and then seal any cracks.
- Winterize your deck and patio.
- Cover your lawn and patio furniture.
- Check your doors, windows, and the wood trim around them for gaps that can let cold air in. Caulk any gaps and apply a coat of paint.
- Drain any gas from your lawnmower and put it away.
- Make sure your snowblower has been tuned up; fill it with gas.
- Have your chimney swept.
