- Water your yard in the morning or evening. It is cooler at those times, and therefore the water is more likely to stay in the soil and not evaporate.
- If you have an inground irrigation system, make sure it has a rain sensor, so it does not run during or after a rain shower.
- Get a rain barrel to collect rainwater from your downspouts, and then use that to water your garden.
- Layer mulch to retain water and lessen the need to water.
- Plant native or drought-tolerant plants that require less water.
- Buy a soil moisture probe to assess the need to water.
- Use a broom instead of water to clean your driveway, patio, etc.
- Cover your swimming pool, so that the water does not evaporate.
- Go to the car wash instead of washing your car at home. Washing your car at home can easily use 100 gallons of water. Commercial car washes use less.
- If you do feel the need to wash your car at home, use a bucket and not the hose.
