A standby generator can prevent loss when the power goes out due to extreme weather (heat, cold, or rain), or if there is a power outage in your home for any other reason.
Standby generators are very reliable and may be a once-in-a-lifetime investment. But to ensure your backup generator lasts for many years to come, it needs to be properly maintained. Without proper maintenance, the standby generator may fail. Additionally, not keeping it maintained could invalidate the warranty.
There are some things you can do yourself, but there are other things you may need a professional electrician to perform.
Things You Can Do to Maintain Your Standby Generator
On a weekly basis:
- Run the generator, ensuring it runs without alarms or warnings.
- Ensure the generator is in “auto” mode so it starts automatically.
- Make sure there are no fluid leaks.
On a monthly basis, or after extended use:
- Maintain general cleanliness.
- Check for rodents in an enclosed unit.
- Check the oil level after the unit has been shut down for at least 10 minutes.
- Check the coolant level.
- Check the fuel level and fuel/water separators on diesel units, adding fuel and/or water if necessary.
- Inspect the fuel supply piping for leaks on gaseous units.
- Check for loose clamps or wire connections.
- Inspect the batteries for signs of corrosion and check the battery charger.
